How To Be Consistent with Your Healthy Lifestyle

Healthy lifestyle consistency – setting your “why,” building supportive environments, and staying committed to fitness goals.

When people decide they want to get fit, they are usually full to the brim with motivation and set grandiose goals of getting fit within the month, only to be disillusioned with not seeing results instantly and giving up within a few weeks. If this sounds all too familiar, this blog post is for you. In a world full of instant gratification at our fingertips, unfortunately, fitness and healthy living are areas where we must trust in delayed gratification and have full faith that these 1% changes here and there will culminate in a big change further down the line.

Humans are emotional creatures; consistency lies in understanding the deep emotional reasons behind your desire to lead a healthier life. It’s not just about superficial goals like weight loss or appearance; it’s about internal drivers like wanting to feel better, manage health conditions, or set an example for loved ones. Your “why” provides the emotional fuel needed to overcome challenges and stay on track, especially during bad days and moments of low motivation. Having a clear mindset and reason to call back on when questioning why you should carry on with your new healthy habits will keep you on the straight and narrow.

While having ambitious aspirations is great, it’s essential to ground your goals. By all means, set goals that are hard to attain, but make smaller step goals along the way. For example, if you want to exercise five times a week, start with once a week then gradually build up to the bigger goal once you have successfully formed your new habit. Long-term success stems from setting achievable objectives that can be sustained over time. Focus on making gradual progress rather than seeking quick fixes. By setting realistic goals aligned with your overarching vision, you pave the way for consistent action and lasting results.

Your surroundings play a crucial role in shaping your habits. Adjust your environment to facilitate healthy choices and behaviours. Whether it’s organising your space to prioritise exercise, stocking up on nutritious foods, or establishing daily routines, optimising your surroundings can reinforce consistency and make healthy living more accessible. In ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear, he outlines how to create a habit that sticks. The first law is making it obvious; this could be setting out your workout clothes the night before so it alleviates the effort needed to start the task and serves as a reminder when you see it.

Monitoring your journey allows you to stay accountable and track your growth over time. Whether through journaling, habit trackers, or digital tools, find a method that works for you. Celebrate your victories, no matter how small, and use setbacks as opportunities for learning and adjustment. Tracking progress provides clarity and motivation, helping you stay consistent on your path to better health.

Consistency doesn’t mean perfection. Embrace flexibility and resilience in your approach. Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. Referring back to ‘Atomic Habits’, a good practice to follow is to never fail your habit twice, as mentally it is a lot tougher to restart your habit after two consecutive days off. Instead of viewing slip-ups as failures, see them as part of the learning process. Adapt to challenges, adjust your strategies when needed, and extend yourself grace along the way. By maintaining a flexible mindset, you can navigate obstacles with resilience and continue progressing towards your goals.

Sustainable consistency is fuelled by enjoyment and fulfilment. Embrace variety and find activities that bring you joy. If you hate running, don’t force yourself to run just because you see that’s what other people do; replace it with a different form of movement that you enjoy. Whether it’s trying new workouts, joining social groups, or exploring outdoor adventures, infuse your healthy lifestyle with excitement and pleasure. By making wellness an enjoyable part of your life, you cultivate a positive mindset and sustain motivation for the long run.

While it’s tempting to get caught up in intricate diet plans or rigorous workout routines, consistency ultimately boils down to commitment. Choose a lifestyle approach that resonates with you and can be integrated seamlessly into your daily life. Focus less on complexity and more on dedication. Consistency is about showing up each day, regardless of the circumstances, and staying true to your health journey.

In conclusion, consistency is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. By understanding your “why,” setting realistic goals, creating supportive environments, tracking progress, practising flexibility, finding joy in the journey, and prioritising commitment, you can cultivate sustainable habits that lead to lasting health and wellness. Remember, it’s not about perfection but about progress and persistence. Embrace the journey, stay consistent, and reap the rewards of a healthier, happier life.
